The high-level skills obtained during the doctoral course in the field of vital processes related to human well-being and the organism-environment interaction (acquisition of titles such as publications in ISI scientific journals and participation in conferences) will enable participation in public competitions for temporary and permanent positions in national and international academic institutions. Furthermore, the acquired competencies will provide opportunities for employment in research activities within public entities (e.g., CNR, ARPA, ISPRA, zooprophylactic institutes, National Parks), international organizations, and national and international industries.
The advanced training obtained during the PhD course, including project management, problem-solving skills, teamwork, data analysis, etc., will also qualify individuals for managerial or coordinating positions in both public and private companies.

Curriculum: Vital Processes and Human Well-being
The educational activities and scientific laboratory work included in this curriculum aim to provide excellent training with high-profile skills in biocellular and biomolecular research. Special attention will be given to vital processes closely related to human well-being and health, such as nutrition, cell communication, inflammation, cellular regeneration, and differentiation. Topics will also include microorganisms that coexist with humans in physiology and pathology, their physiology, biology, ecology, and strategies for their control. The processes involved will be studied at the molecular and cellular levels, and when applicable, at the tissue organization level.

Curriculum: Organism-Environment Interaction
The scientific laboratory and fieldwork educational activities included in this curriculum aim to provide excellent theoretical and practical training in the study of animal and plant organisms and the environments in which they live. The training program focuses on studying the physical, chemical, and biological processes that regulate organism-environment interactions, with a focus on developing bio-ecological models and indicators that allow for the assessment of environmental quality in ecosystems and the definition of sustainability in production processes and the use of natural resources. Special attention is dedicated to the biocoenoses of inland waters and the Apennine environments that characterize the region, including Lake Trasimeno, to understand the functional processes that ensure ecosystem services and the conservation of biodiversity. This is also aimed at promoting research on effective strategies for adapting to climate change and mitigating anthropic impacts.

Among the main challenges that contemporary society faces, the well-being of humans in harmony with the preservation of the natural environment plays a central role, also in relation with the need to preserve the full functionality of ecosystems and ensuring the essential services they provide both in the present and in the future. Within this framework, the Ph.D. program in Biological and Natural Sciences aims to provide in-depth theoretical and practical expertise in the field of life sciences related to humans and the environment. Specifically, the program is structured into two curricula: one focused on studying the key vital processes underlying human well-being and health, such as nutrition, cell communication, inflammation, cellular regeneration, and differentiation (Curriculum: Vital Processes and Human Well-being); the other dedicated to studying the physical, chemical, and biological processes that regulate the interaction of animal and plant organisms with their environment, also with the purpose of providing analytical and intervention tools for the management of conservation issues and the sustainable use of biodiversity (Curriculum: Organism-Environment Interaction).
PhD course aims
The educational and scientific activities included in the program aim to train internationally qualified research doctors capable of independently developing, proposing, and conducting original research projects in the most advanced areas of basic biological and naturalistic disciplines. All of this is done to ensure the well-being of organisms and the functionality of ecosystems, enhancing quality and safety in human-environment interactions.
In particular, the curriculum "Vital Processes and Human Well-being" aims to train young researchers capable of developing and applying innovative and complex methodologies, including biotechnological ones, to address the most advanced aspects of basic biological disciplines. This involves conducting independent and original research supported by the expertise of the teaching staff (doctoral board) of the PhD.
Similarly, the training of Ph.D. students in the "Organism-Environment Interaction" curriculum will enable them to autonomously carry out fundamental or applied research projects in the most advanced fields of animal and plant biology and ecology, as well as in the management and conservation of natural resources. This will be accomplished with the help of the scientific and cultural competencies of the board members of the PhD.
Additional objectives of the Ph.D. program as a whole include:
Promoting collaboration between research institutions, advanced training schools, public and private companies in the field of biological and natural sciences. This is also aimed at facilitating the entry of Ph.D. graduates into leadership and coordination job positions.
Promoting the internationalization of research through mandatory stays abroad for Ph.D. students, establishing and implementing international scientific collaborations, involving foreign teachers, and recruiting non-Italian Ph.D. candidates.
A fundamental and central element of the doctoral training path is involvement in experimental research activities. Ph.D. students will dedicate full time to their research projects, providing critical and active contributions, thereby achieving scientific and managerial autonomy.

At the moment, 26 universities, 5 research centers and institutions, 15 Italian and foreign companies have joined this project.
The PhD in Catalysis intends to create a multidisciplinary structure aimed at post-graduate training in the field of catalyzed processes of both academic and industrial interest. This project is motivated by the crucial importance that chemistry and catalysis have in all strategic areas for the competitiveness of a country system. From the production of electricity to that of hydrogen, from polymers to semiconductor materials, from the fundamental products of fine chemicals (fertilizers, flavourings, additives, etc. etc.) to pharmacologically active molecules (API), the development of catalytic processes represents the key tool to make a process efficient and sustainable.
With the involvement of national reference figures from both the academic and industrial worlds, and with the support of eminent scientists of international standing, the Academic Board of this PhD course intends to create a cultural platform capable of creating a new generation of capable professionals to develop new concepts of catalysis in research and innovation.

The PhD in Chemical Sciences is activated in the Dipartimento di Chimica Biologia e Biotecnologie and it is recognized by all the members as a key teaching tool for succeeding in the research activities of this Department.
The PhD program is aimed at training new generations of researchers who will be able to play an active role in the future challenges of society related to science and technology. Thanks to a prestigious college of teachers and research laboratories of consolidated international prestige, the PhD student will cultivate their potential in a competitive environment that will allow them to tackle challenging scientific issues and contribute to the excellence in science.
Besides their collaborative research activities, all the PhD students will have the possibility of attending national and international schools, spending periods of study abroad in internationally renowned laboratories and attending conferences where they will be encouraged to present their results in front of a national or international audience.
The national evaluation made by ANVUR has ranked DCBB at the best department in the area of chemical sciences among the mid-size universities. This important recognition opened to a 8.7 million euros financial support for the project AMIS (A Molecular Integrated for a Sustainable Development) for the years 2018-2022.
Therefore since 2018, the PhD students in Chemical Sciences of DCBB, will also have the opportunity to contribute to the research developed within the project AMIS and also work in the excellence laboratories activated within this project.
The research facilities of the DCBB are capable for the high-level training of at least 15 PhD students for each cycle. The Board of Professors of the XXXV cycle is made up of 21 (twenty one) members, mostly belonging to the DCBB, but also to that of Civil and Environmental Engineering and to the CNR-ISTM institute.
The PhD program takes place over three years and is divided into three curricula:
1) Spectroscopy, chemical kinetics and molecular dynamics;
2) Methods and materials for catalysis, energy, the environment and cultural heritage;
3) Theoretical chemistry and computational modelling.
The first Curriculum focuses on the molecular dynamics of elementary processes (reactive and non-reactive), dynamic properties of liquid systems, photophysics, photochemistry, and spectroscopy.
The second Curriculum focuses on advanced synthesis in organic chemistry, green chemistry, eco-sustainable synthetic methodologies, inorganic molecular catalysis, modeling of materials for solar cells, environmental analysis and modelling, materials for the conservation of cultural heritage, inorganic-organic hybrid materials for applications in catalysis, polymeric nano-composites.
The third Curriculum focuses on theoretical chemistry and computational technologies, molecular modeling with the inclusion of Lipidomics, Metabolomics, Quantitative Structure Property Prediction, Pharmaco-kinetics.
With the approved PhD program regulation (see below) the approved training program is organized in 180 CFU (ECTS) and it foresees the attendance during the three-year period of a minimum of 7 courses (3 CFU each, for a total of 21 CFU). All the courses will have the final verification of the knowledge acquired. In addition, due to the intense departmental seminar activities, the PhD course will be encouraged to attend multidisciplinary seminars given by internationally recognized guest of the DCBB. It is mandatory to attend a minimum of 16 seminars (4 CFU, 0.25 CFU per seminar) over the entire PhD course.
Additional CFU will be recognized with the attendance of national and international doctoral schools, the transversal specialization activities offered by the University (linguistic and IT specialization, the activities of enhancing research and intellectual property), participating in conferences and congresses, and spending research periods abroad. Overall, the training activities involve, over the three years, the acquisition of 180 credits, divided according to criteria established by the Board of Professors.
The PhD students will present annual seminars on her/his research and at the end of each year submits a written report to the Board of Professors on the activity carried out and on the results achieved. At the end of the doctoral period, the student will present aa written thesis reporting the results of the research carried out in the three-year period.
The PhD in Chemical Sciences is international and currently, has two active research agreements; one with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel) (Italian contact: Prof. Luigi Vaccaro; Israeli contact: Prof. Dmitri Gelman, Director of the Institute of Chemistry) and another with the Georg-August University of Goettingen (Germany) (Italian contact person: Prof. Luigi Vaccaro; German contact person: Prof. Dr. Lutz Ackermann, Director of the "Institut fuer Organische und Biomolekulare Chemie"). Both agreements provide for the possibility of obtaining the doctoral degree in co-tutorship.
The Doctorate in Chemical Sciences of the University of Perugia has been the official partner of the Consortium ITN-EJD-642294 TCCM (Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modeling) since the XXXI cycle, which includes the University of Groningen, The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, and the Universities of Porto, Paul-Sabatier-Toulouse III, of Valencia, of Barcelona, of the Basque Country, Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris), of Pisa, of Vienna, and Autonomous of Madrid.

Profile of the programme |
The study program aims at providing an advanced methodological preparation, based on constantly updated and high quality scientific content, which allows students to acquire knowledge, competences, abilities to carry out scientific research or the profession in the chemistry. The preparation achieved is adequate both for the continuation of the subsequent training cycle (PhD in Italy pr abroad), or entering the labor market with sufficient skills to take on roles of responsibility. To achieve these goals, the learning and training activities allow a deepening of the basic aspects of chemistry already achieved in the previous cycle of studies and a further, detailed study in one or more aspects of chemistry. The study course is organized in five curricula dedicated to: - Physical Chemistry - Inorganic Chemistry for Energy and Catalysis - Organic chemistry - Energy and Sustainability - Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modeling.
The Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modeling curriculum is associated with the Erasmus Mundus Master in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modeling, TCCM involving 8 other European universities (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain; Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, The Netherlands; Kathotlieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium; Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse lll, France; Universitat de Valencia, Spain; Universitat de Barcelona, Spain; University of the Trieste Studies, ltaly; Sorbonne Université, France) and allows getting a joint title. - The Energy and Sustainability curriculum allows the achievement of a double degree issued with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (for selected students who go on the move for at least a semester at the partner university in Israel). Programme learning outcomes |

Qualification requirements and regulations, including graduation requirements |
Admission to the final test for the achievement of the qualification will require that the student has acquired all the credits foreseen in the study plan for training activities other than the final test. The final test for the achievement of the qualification is public and consists of the presentation of a thesis work to a special commission. The thesis consists of an experimental research activity on a topic related to curriculum chosen by the student. The research work is complemented by the preparation, presentation and discussion of a written thesis in Italian or English, in which the results achieved during the thesis work are reported. |
Examination regulations and grading scale |
Assessment is normally an oral or written exam; in some cases there are intermediate exams during the course; other evaluation elements (seminars, reports, etc.) can be foreseen in specific course units and are described in the Course Unit Profiles. The main exam sessions are held in January/February, March/April, June/July, September/October. Students may retake exams, if not passed. The University provides an ECTS Grading Table, which shows the actual distribution of the examination and final grades among students for each degree programme. The final degree evaluation is expressed in one hundred and tenths (0-110 scale), the minimum grade is 66/110 and the maximum grade is 110/110. The calculation of the final grade of each candidate takes into account the average of the grades obtained in the subject exams, as well as the quality of the work performed in research or in the final thesis which is discussed in public before an exam commission. “Cum laude” (110 cum laude) may be added to the maximum grade if the exam commission decides unanimously. |
Obligatory or optional mobility windows |
The mobility windows are optional and flexible and can cover a semester or an entire academic year depending on the needs of the individual student. The course of study encourages and promotes mobility associated with internship activities (12 ECTS, 2 months) and thesis work (24 ECTS) scheduled for the second semester of the second year through the Erasmus Traineeship program. Students who enroll in the curriculum in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modeling and who intend to achieve the joint degree are required to attend the common courses at the institutions of the consortium during the first semester of the second year. They have to perform part of the work associated with their degree thesis at one of the partner universities abroad. Students who enroll in the Energy and Sustainability curriculum and who intend to achieve the double degree must go to the partner university Hebrew University of Jerusalem on the move during the second semester of the second year (exchange semester according to the joint the agreement). |
Work-based learning |
The course includes a traineeship associated with the thesis. The traineeship can be carried out within the department hosting the course (research-based), but also at external companies (industrial placement) or abroad. The aim of the traineeship is to provide the student with the opportunity to conduct part of the thesis work outside the academy. Part of the free credits can be used to increase the duration of the external traineeship. It is also possible to carry out all the work of the degree thesis in external research institutes or industries, provided that the thesis project includes aspects of innovation and / or research (also applied). |
Occupational profiles of graduates |
After the Master degree, it Is possibile start the profession of Chemist: passing the State exam for the qualification to exercise the profession Section A allows enrollment in the professional register as Senior Chemist. Occupational fields: research, synthesis, analysis, characterization and quality control laboratories, both in the chemical industry as well as in other industries in the sectors of health, environment, energy, food, conservation of cultural heritage, polymers, adhesives, paints, dyes, products for agriculture, etc., in research institutes and in the public sector. Further possibilities are consultancy activities as a freelancer (for the skills foreseen for the second level graduate) in the sectors of analysis and quality control, environmental protection and civil protection activities.
